Platinum prints

Remoteness is a medium of clarification

Nightfall / Daybreak

These works - Nightfall/Daybreak and Remoteness is a medium of clarification are large scale platinum prints exposed by sunlight. (Due to the contact printing nature of early photographic processes, platinum prints are consequently normally the size of a photographic negative - the costliness of the emulsion also tends to limit the scale at which it is normally used).

At first glance, the images appear to be simply monochromatic print outs of text, but upon closer examination, the surface of the print reveals itself to hold a sense of depth and space in the blackness of the platinum surface unachievable in modern inkjet printing.

These works also relate to other works across a range of media that explore aspects of light and dark and perception at times of transition (such as twilight). See also Last Light/First Light and drawings on the main menu.
